[June] Sagra delle
fave (Broad Bean Festival): this is the time to test the
cooking of broad beans. After being harvested at the end of
May and left to dry under the sun, broad beans are cleaned
one by one to remove their outer film using two stones, then
they are stewed in big saucepans on the fire. To while away
the time, the country people sing, play and dance folklore
music. When the broad beans are ready, they are consumed
accompanied by homemade bread and wine.
[July] Museum opening:
a local museum will be opened in a recently restored noble
house to display finds of high artistic, historical and
cultural value. The pieces displayed will enchant visitors
with the taste of a journey in the past among Sicans, Greeks,
Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs and Hebrews.
[July] Beginning of
the Octave of the Feast of the Crucifix and Saint Mary of
the Miracles: during the afternoon of the Sunday before
the real feast, the sacred image of the Crucifix is carried
– amidst sacred bells ringing, fireworks, band music and the
bearers’ shouts – from the present altar to the altar in the
Cathedral with the monumental “vara”.
[July] Feast of the
Crucifix and Saint Mary of the Miracles: the bang of the
alborata opens celebrations for the patron saints. The music
bands parading the streets, Masses celebrated at the altar,
the joyful yelling of the children, are all prelude to the
great Sunday event: the meeting between the two sacred
images on the Lauria plane and the picturesque procession
along the steep and winding little streets up the mountain.
Then, after the fireworks show, everything becomes silent
again, tiredness wins over the country people and prepares
the soul to go back to the daily routine life.
[August] The
Quindicina (the Fortnight): from August 1 to 15, the
Holy Mass is celebrated every morning at 6 o’clock in the
beautiful Cathedral to pay tribute to Mary of the Assumption.
The fresh morning air in the hottest period of the year
attracts many believers, especially the elderly and children.
[August] Feast of
non-residents: this event has been established by the
local public administration to celebrate all those who
reluctantly had to leave their home to work elsewhere, but
still love their original village and are homesick, though
distinguished for their industriousness, talent and skills.
[August] Feast of
the Holy Crucifix and Saint Anne: this suggestive and
unique event takes place on the second Sunday of the month
of August and is a very important celebration in the local
tradition. It consists in the procession of the “Father
Rectors”, starting from the parish church of San Pellegrino
and ending at the church of Montevergine on Sunday morning.
In the afternoon, with another procession, the Crucifix is
carried on the shoulders by the faithful, while many other
devotees from Caltabellotta and from all the nearby villages
follow.
[August] Feast of
San Pellegrino: religion, culture, tradition and
folklore merge again in the celebrations devoted to the
patron saint of the village, particularly on the morning of
the 18th, when the local cattle breeders take their herds in
the Calvario area for the annual feast called of “San
Pellegrino”. On the evening of the 18th, the sacred image of
the saint is brought in procession from the hermitage up to
the gateway to the village and then, later in the night,
people come back in the middle of crackers and fireworks.
[August - September] Peace of Caltabellotta: the pride of Caltabellotta is
the recall of the most widely known historical event of the
country, which established peace after the bloody “Vespri”
war. The celebrations here acquire a Medieval taste that
make participants feel as if they are in a gone-by time and
mainly highlight the much-sought for peace that all the
people on earth desire. Historical parades, conferences,
food festivals, tasting tours and much more strengthen the
re-evocation event in all its splendour.
Many other cultural, music and
entertainment events will take place during the summer
months.
