FORMER CHURCH OF SAN
FRANCESCO (ST. FRANCIS):
Remains of the gate of the ancient church of Saint Francis
in the main street of Caltabellotta.
SICAN NECROPOLIS:
22 cave tombs of prehistoric origin; they are at the eastern
and western entrance to the village.
SAN CONO CAVES:
A set of caves inhabited since the Sican period, surrounded
by a myriad of cave tombs.
RUINS OF THE CHURCH OF SAN
BENEDETTO AND ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXCAVATIONS:
Archaeological finds in the Gulea area, approximately dated
to around the 6th century BC
SACRIFICE ALTAR TO GOD KRONOS:
This double stair altar was used in the Greek and Roman ages
for sacrifices, including human sacrifices.
CHIESA DELLA PIETA':
At mid way, the small church of the Pietą is a rural
construction resting on a rock with a very simple staircase
leading to its door; it is a picturesque example of popular
architecture.
CAPPUCCINI CHURCH:
Down the panoramic road and after via Roma one reaches the
southern suburbs of the village: the church of Saint Francis
of Assisi lies here, once belonged to the disappeared
Convent of the Cappuccini Friars (founded in 1614).
CARMINE CHURCH:
The "Carmine" church, located in Umberto I square, is the
main church or Matrice. Its structure stands out from the
basin, with a sober cusped faēade, slightly enlivened by
unplastered ashlars that support the Renaissance-style flat
arch portal.
CHIESA DEL COLLEGIO:
This church is located in the northern section of the
botteghelle (Li putieddi) neighbourhood. Recently restored,
it contains many art works in its interior.
CHIESA DELL'ITRIA:
Going back to the center of the village, the 18th century
church of Santa Maria was originally called church of the
Souls in Purgatory.
THE SANCTUARY OF MONTEVERGINE
(SANT'ANNA):
In the outskirts of the locality called Sant'Anna, this
sanctuary offers many art works to admire.
CHURCH OF SAN PELLEGRINO (SANT'ANNA):
Located in the center of the small village of Sant'Anna,
this church is devoted to the first bishop of Triokala. It
is a peculiar construction that contains many interesting
art works.
THE NORMAN CASTLE AND TOWER:
Under the massive body of the high rock (950 m) dominating
the settled area lies the last melancholic ruin of the
Norman castle built over the remains of the previous Arab
fortalice.
THE BADIA:
Leave Umberto I square and climb up via Colonnello Vita to
find the splendid faēade of the Badia, an ancient monastery
of the Benedictine nuns of Santa Maria di Valverde.
LU PIRTUSU:
This natural opening in the rock creates, in its highest
part, a communication way between the northern and the
southern sections of the town.
THE OLD CASTLE:
Ruins of the ancient fortifications built by the rebel
slaves.
VILLA COMUNALE:
The municipal villa was formerly the garden of the Carmelite
friars of the church of Sant'Agostino; today it is the green
area of Caltabellotta.
COLLEGIO DI SANTA MARIA DEL
FERVORE (SANT'ANNA):
Building complex managed by the nuns of Santa Maria del
Fervore in the locality of Sant'Anna.
PIAZZA FONTANA (SANT'ANNA):
Fountain of the central square of the small village of Sant'Anna,
where the local social life takes place.
CASTLE OF POGGIODIANA
(CONTRADA POGGIODIANA _ RIBERA):
The castle of Poggiodiana lies at 4 km from Ribera on a 200
m high hill. It can be reached only on foot walking along a
path in the countryside.
